Whilst many claims are very similar in nature from domestic floods, fires and burglaries to business losses, including disruption of the running of the business, there can be many varied and unusual losses. There is always an element of great satisfaction when a claimant is happy to pay his invoice for a job well done.
A recent water damage claim has demonstrated the power of technology. I am driving to an appointment just before Christmas when I receive a diverted call on my mobile. It was from Australia where my future clients were visiting their son over the holiday period. My details had been taken from my website and following a brief conversation I was engaged to deal with a burst pipe claim which had seriously damaged the home.
By the time the insured returned home four weeks later the claim process was well under way with dehumidifiers installed, meetings with loss adjusters arranged and the building and contents claims agreed in principal. It only required my client to decide on the colour scheme for the "new home".
Only a few years ago I was reluctant to use the bluetooth in my car and computers scared me. How times have changed for the better and the above mentiond claim is a prime example.
Hotel in Yeovil
A public house/restaurant/hotel which suffered a major fire, flood and burglary within a period of three months. The business was closed for 15 months and reopened recently to better than ever turnover following the modernisation of the property. This one claim covered all the major areas of Loss Assessing to include building, stock, fixtures and fittings, domestic possessions and business interruption.
Lost diamond ring
A gentleman turned up at our office holding a letter from insurers stating they were not able to pay for his wife's lost £27,000 diamond ring, which was specified on the policy, due to policy endorsements which had been breached. The circumstances of this ring were thoroughly investigated and the policy conditions interpreted in the correct manner and eventually the insurers "changed their mind" and instructed the suppliers to replace the ring. As the quality of the diamond was not easily sourced the actual replacement ring was valued at 30% more than the sum insuresd.
